about

The Baguala is a musical genre from the North West of Argentina, precisely from the province of Salta. This song of pre-Hispanic origin, non-choreographic, is characterized by its ternary rhythm. The melodic structure is built around two notes, the tonic, the fifth and the octave; and this song is accompanied by the Caja, an Andean drum, which beats like a beating heart.
In my Baguala I wanted to recreate the solitude, melancholy and melodic expressiveness that have always marked me in this Andean musical genre, which is popularly referred to as the Argentine Blues.
The expressive playing of the piano allowed me to imagine a plastic world, where movement is organically integrated into the music. The harmony (posed or chanted), the articulations in the speech, as well as the repeated notes build this ephemeral dance.

Commissioned by La Scala Paris, this piece is dedicated to David Kadouch and Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier.
